2021 Achievement Award Winner Announced!
Cleveland East Chi Omega Alumnae award an annual $1000 scholarship to a Cleveland area Chi Omega. The criteria include: outstanding scholarship & leadership in Chi Omega, on campus and in the community. We are thrilled to announce this year's Achievement Award Winner :
Lilly Steiger, Xi Mu University of Rochester, Beachwood OH
Junior, Majoring in Brian & Cognitive Sciences 3.9
Here's Lilly's unique story in her words: "In the late summer of 2020, over 75% of my chapter (Xi Mu) disaffiliated from Chi Omega because it wasn’t clear to them how they could be in a sorority and also be an advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). However, I believed in the potential of Chi Omega to change for the better, so I—along with ten others—decided to stay. In November, I was slated into the roles of President, Personnel Chair, Panhellenic Delegate, and Facilities Manager. Since then, I have navigated the daily running of a small chapter, dealt with COVID restrictions and more disaffiliations, pushed for DEI changes in Chi Omega and in Greek Life on our campus, and executed a successful formal recruitment. Though this can often be overwhelming, I always do my best."
DONATIONS to our scholarship fund within the Chi Omega Foundation support our Achievement Award.  Thanks to our faithful sisters we continue to award a $1000 Achievement Award annually.  We appreciate all the donors, especially those who have contributed regularly since our fund was established.

There is a donation match currently underway for each donation of  $18.95 or more.  Donations may be sent directly to the Chi Omega Foundation with a notation that it be directed to our  Chi Omega Cleveland East Alumnae Scholarship Fund or send them to Nancy Toth to forward them for you.

Members can leave messages at the FB page called Happy Birthday Sarah Amend. We will keep you posted.

6/12/16

The following is from our State Board president.

Sisters, please keep this collegiate member in your thoughts.

One of the collegiate members of the Pi Alpha Chapter at the University of Cincinnati, Sarah Amend, has cystic fibrosis. Sarah became so ill during this past spring semester that she was admitted to Cincinnati Children's Hospital in early March and has been in a hospital ever since. As of June 1st, Sarah was flown to the Cleveland Clinic to get her well enough and to await a double lung transplant when donor lungs become available. Even the best prognosis has this going on for several months. I am sure you can imagine how terrified and concerned her family and Chi Omega sisters are.

Sarah's parents, Mike and Beth Amend, have been keeping the advisors and members of Pi Alpha updated on Sarah's condition and the reports have been heart-wrenching. When Sarah is not sedated, she tries to speak, but her parents say Sarah's ability to mouth words is getting harder each day and she is too weak to move much. Her Pi Alpha sisters have sent her many cards and letters and made her a special blanket and sent several "get well" and birthday videos. I think it is especially hard on Sarah's parents because they are only allowed to visit her for an hour or two each day at the Cleveland Clinic instead on when she was in Cincinnati where at least one of her parents never left her side. Sarah has made it known that she wants to live and said early on that she wants to "make it through this and come out on the other side." You can imagine after 12 weeks of torture, 12 weeks of growing weaker and having more and more complications while more and more complex machines are attached to her body.... that it hurts tremendously for her parents to see this happening even for her own good. Fortunately, the Cleveland Clinic is the best place possible for a lung transplant (number one in the nation), and her parents say that every nurse, every doctor, everyone they have met has been compassionate, professional and focused.

What I am asking is if you could spread the word among the Cleveland East and West Alumnae members to keep Sarah and her parents in your thoughts and prayers.

Loyally,

Cynthia

Today is Pi day!  You know, Pi estimated to be 3.1415925... It's that irrational number that gives you the circumference of a circle if you multiply it by the diameter.  Do something with MATH today, just for fun.

Can you answer this? Two is the first prime number.  What's the eleventh prime number?     2,3,5,7,11, __,__,....

See that wasn't too hard!

We note with sadness the passing of two Chi O sisters,  Vilma (Willy) Lavetti Kohn, Epsilon,87, and Elizabeth Carroll Shearer, Alpha Delta,89.  Both were remarkable women, we can be proud to claim as sisters.   Their obituaries were in the Cleveland Plain Dealer.   Donations will be sent to our scholarship fund in their memory.

Christmas Brunch at Wendy's was wonderful.  See photos in Gallery.   We collected books for a local childrens library and held a mini raffle for Make-a-Wish.   Joyce S. was the lucky raffle winner of the Vera Bradley purse and it was her birthday! Perfect!!!

We  welcomed another sister into the Omega Chapter on 7/19/ 2014, Joyce Douglas.  Joyce was preceeded by her husband, Bill,  just months ago.  Her daugher, Sandra (Chi Omega), and sons Richard, Christian, and Chip were all at Stroud Lawrence to greet family and friends.  Several ChiO's gathered to remember this beautiful sister, her wonderfully gracious smile, and the many ChiO dinners/meetings we shared in her home.  There will be a funeral mass at St.Noel Church tomorrow 7/22 at 10am.

TWO JOIN OMEGA CHAPTER

From Eudora(Ede)Ebert Spencer:     Martha (Marty)Sielaff Peters Joins Omega Chapter April 2014 I was saddened to hear of the passing of Marty Peters. Before our sister relationship as Cleveland Chi Omega Alumnae, I knew Marty during our childhood years. She lived in close proximity to me in Cleveland Heights. Our backyards faced each other. Also, her family and mine were members of the same church. Marty was a friendly, hands-on president of the our alumnae chapter. She was very committed to Shi Omega's Social Service projects. Our archives has a photo of Marty decorating a Christmas tree at the Ansel Road Golden Age Center. Her daughter, Laura (age3), is also there, helping out with the tree trimming. I know Marty will be remembered and greatly missed by all who knew her. Editor's Note: Marty Peters was Cleveland Chi Omega Alumnae East's president 1968-1970. Marty died last Sunday. Bob Peters let Joyce Schaefer know that they are in Fl but are returning to MI. OBit is at Pixley Funeral home.

BEVERLY HOWALD

We were saddened to see Beverly Lindt Howald, Rho Gamma(Hillsdale), listed in the Plain Dealer obits on 4/27/14. She died on March 17,2014 at Fairmount Health Center in Willoughby. Beverly was active in Chi O East until she and husband, Lee moved out of the area. When I first moved to Cleveland in 1971, Beverly picked me up at my home in South Euclid and took me to my very first alumnae meeting! What a world she opened for me. God Speed, Beverly.
